Announcement from Climate and Environment Editor Zachary Goldfarb and Deputy Climate and Environment Editor Juliet Eilperin:

We are delighted to announce that Paulina Firozi will become our new Weather Editor.

Paulina takes on this new role after spending more than two years as an editor on Climate, most recently as the climate and weather news editor. As an informal deputy to Jason Samenow, she’s played a key role in daily and enterprise coverage. She’s led the team through major news moments and natural disasters, notably steering days of live coverage during last year’s deadly fires in Maui. She also edits Kasha Patel’s Hidden Planet column, which covers mystifying and marvelous revelations from Earth to space. Paulina is known for her collaborative spirit and for pushing for strong cross-department communication.

She has demonstrated a thoughtful approach to delivering accessible, revelatory and urgent news to readers about weather events – and the profound ways they can impact human life. She’s excited to lead a group of wonderful and ambitious reporters who, along with a new meteorologist, will continue to make The Post’s national and global weather coverage stand out.

Paulina will also work closely with other Climate editors and reporters on weather events and continue her collaboration with Jason, who will continue to help steer local weather coverage after transitioning to becoming a contractor.

Prior to joining Climate, Paulina was a reporter on the General Assignment team. She joined The Washington Post in 2017 to be the first researcher for three policy newsletters – The Health 202, The Finance 202 and The Energy 202. Before returning to The Post, she was a Metro intern in 2015.

Please congratulate Paulina, who will start her new role on Sept. 30.
