Announcement from Editorial Director, States, Ryan Hutchins, New York Senior Editor Sally Goldenberg, and Executive Editor Joe Schatz:

Team,

We're thrilled to announce a blockbuster new hire in New York: Michael Gartland, who comes to us from the Daily News, will start later this month as a New York Editor. He'll be based in NYC.

Reporting to Sally Goldenberg, Mike will play a critical role in shaping our reporting on a key global power center. He'll lead reporters in both Manhattan and Albany, and put much of his focus on the policy space.

We've taken a series of steps over the past year to strengthen our decade-old operation in New York: Growing the New York Playbook team and revamping the newsletter; adding a reporter in the state Capitol; expanding and sharpening New York Playbook PM; launching a new New York hub page; delivering new Pro Analysis features; and more.

Mike's hire marks another important step in orienting the New York team for another decade of success. In interviews, Mike impressed us with his drive to deliver stories of consequence — stories that are sure to match our newsroom-wide quest for impact. It's clearly that sort of work that's driven him in his career up to now.

Mike is an award-winning journalist who's worked for the past decade as a City Hall reporter for the Daily News and, prior to that, the New York Post. He also served as a statehouse reporter for The Record in New Jersey and as a religion reporter for The Post and Courier in Charleston, S.C. His career as a journalist began in Brooklyn at the Bay News.

During his tenure at the Daily News, Mike broke exclusives about former Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin submitting false information on background check forms, Mayor Eric Adams allegedly warning his former buildings commissioner to beware of wiretaps and of Mayor Bill de Blasio's shady land deal with two slumlords.

Mike was born in Freehold, N.J. and raised in the Bronx and Pelham, N.Y. He attended Carnegie Mellon University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. While working at The Record, in his spare time he co-directed the documentary, Yankeeland: In the Shadow of the Stadium, a film about the old Yankee Stadium and the surrounding area.

These days, Mike likes to spend his free time with his two children — reading, playing in the park and going to ballgames.

Please join us in welcoming him to POLITICO.
