The Independent, the global media brand, continuing its mission to make change happen, has announced the launch of its inaugural Climate 100 List. The list will be revealed in September to coincide with the United Nations Summit of the Future and 15th annual NYC Climate Week, and celebrate individuals and organizations collectively striving to find solutions to combat climate change and global warming.

The inaugural Climate 100 List, handpicked by The Independent, will feature 100 leading names and lesser-known figures from around the world in a variety of different sectors — including science, academia, activism, philanthropy, sport, travel, business, tech, fashion and entertainment. Each name selected will embody The Independent’s own dedication and commitment to making change happen for global audiences, with climate change and the environment being at the core of The Independent’s journalism for nearly 40 years. Those named in the Climate 100 List closely reflect the passion and activism of both The Independent and its readership base.

The Climate 100 List arrives at a pivotal moment in the face of climate change. Last year was the hottest in human history, with nearly half the days breaching the 2.7F (1.5C) warming threshold set by world leaders in 2015. Climate experts now believe that 2024 could outpace even the previous 12 months.

“For 37 years, climate change has been at the forefront of our reporting, with an emphasis on providing factually-based insights to our readers to inform their decisions and actions,” said Zach Leonard, chief operating officer, The Independent.

“We are at a crucial moment in history, where we are constantly faced with global climate catastrophes and the severe impacts of global warming. The need for change is imperative, and with the Climate 100 List, we aim to not only recognize those dedicating their lives to influence progress, but to inspire others to get involved and fight back against climate change.”

The Climate 100 List will be released Sept. 21-22, and celebrated at a premiere event on Sept. 25 in New York City during the United Nations Summit of the Future, and the 15th annual NYC Climate Week.

The Independent is also encouraging its readers to contribute to the Climate 100 List by submitting five final nominees. Readers can submit by completing the form here by the Aug. 16 deadline.
